Phonics
At Bolnore we follow the synthetic, systematic phonics programme Read Write Inc. In Early Years and Key Stage One which exceeds the demands of the National Curriculum and ensures that all pupils, including the weakest readers, make sufficient progress to meet or exceed age-related expectations. All staff receive regular training in the teaching of systematic, synthetic phonics. We continually coach and train staff so that the children receive the best phonics teaching.
All classes have the correct resources needed to deliver excellent lessons including reading books which closely match the children’s increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words, flash cards, magnetic letters and each class has a speed sound chart to aid children’s spelling.
Phonics sessions take place daily for EYFS and Key Stage One. Key Stage One lessons last about 45 minutes and children learn to read a new sound (grapheme), read that sound within words, review previously taught sounds and learn to spell words using the new sound. Children then take part in paired reading using an appropriate text. Children read the same text over 3 times so that by their third read they can read it fluently with a storyteller voice and can retrieve and infer answers about the text they have read.
Children are grouped according to ability. Rigorous assessment takes place every 6 weeks and the Phonics Lead tracks all children’s progress carefully across year groups. The groups are fluid and children are moved depending on their need every 6 weeks. Children who are not making expected progress are identified earlier on additional support is put into place.
Rapid one to one and small group interventions with trained staff ensure quick catch up for children identified as not making expected progress. Additionally, children who have not met the expected standard in the Year One Phonics Screening are carefully tracked as to ensure success at the end of key stage one. If children are reading below age related expectations as they enter Key Stage 2 then they continue to receive targeted Read Write Inc lessons.
We have seen children grasp the reading code quickly by using this scheme and their confidence to read and write is wonderful to see.
