Year 5

Life in Year 5

Welcome to Year 5! The year ahead offers children the opportunity to build on previous learning from Year 4 and deepen their understanding through a range of workshops, trips and hands on learning experiences. Your child will be supported in their transition into Year 5 in order for them to become more independent in their organisation and learning as they make their way up towards the top of the school. Children continue to develop their Forest School skills and enjoy an exciting residential in the Spring Term.

Transition

Children will begin their transition into Year 5 at the end of Year 4 with visits to their new classrooms and meeting their new teacher. Their transition continues as they enter Year 5 and become settled into a new routine. In Year 5 we work slightly differently, as the Maths is taught by one teacher and English by the other. A similar model is used in Year 6 and we feel that this is really beneficial to preparing the children for reaching the top of the school and also getting the children ready for the transition to Secondary School. The children often get the opportunity to mix up as a year group and creates a real year group bond!

Parent communication

Parents are welcome to talk to class teachers before and after school or to arrange a meeting. Children’s learning is shared through the Parent evenings, the Seesaw App, newsletters and Find Out Friday’s which the first Friday of every month.

Home learning

Children will be given pre-learning information and a topic overview which will provide ideas for work to be carried out at home. This work is then celebrated in class. In Year 5, we also introduce the children to more formal homework. They each receive their own Maths and Spelling book and work from this is set every week. Work is gone over in class and extra support is given where needed. This again helps with the transition to Year 6 and allows the children to get used to the idea and responsibility of homework.
